Why It’s Important

It's important to build your digital assets on real estate you own.

Each business should have its own private access to domain info and settings (DNS) as well as hosting that provides as much flexibility as possible.

I recommend two options for website owners at this time:

  1. Webflow
  2. WordPress

If you go with Webflow you are using the industry-leading no-code website development platform. It includes numerous hosting options for basic websites, blogs, and eCommerce shops. Although it is a no-code platform, there is a much steeper learning curve than option 2.

WordPress is the easiest, cheapest, and most secure website platform in the world. The majority of websites are run on WordPress. If you can about SEO, you will get the best results possible by using WordPress. There are thousands of free plugins available on WordPress to help you add functionality to your website.

If you use WordPress then I recommend you get a domain and hosting package from NameCheap. I've used them for 7+ years and have always gotten good prices and good customer service and support.

It’s important that you use a quality host so that your website speed is adequate for online success. It’s easy to run a speed test on any website or page. Ideally, the page load is less than 2 seconds or users may begin to navigate away from the page.

A tool like Cloudflare can be useful for protecting your website from 3rd party DDOS attacks. It can also speed up content delivery worldwide by using their CDN.

Owning your own domain and hosting is a foundational element in building an online business.

What to ask / look for:

  1. What is your primary domain name?
  2. Do you have any other domain names?
  3. Do you have any active subdomains?
  4. What company is your domain hosted with?
  5. What company is your website hosted with?
  6. Are you using a CDN or other 3rd party domain protection such as CloudFlare?
